A slight noise woke Coop and he was alert to someone near him. He could feel breath on his cheek. Defensive techniques ran through his mind. He feigned sleep and then sprang from the sofa to surprise the intruder. The pink light of dawn was beginning to come through the front window of the office and his eyes adjusted to the figure next to the sofa. He exhaled a loud breath and said, “Gus, what the hell?”

A soft rumble came from the dog. Coop collapsed on the sofa, his heart pounding in his chest. He gave Gus a pet and scratched him behind the ears. “You scared me, buddy.” Gus rested his head on Coop’s thigh and sighed. Once Coop’s pulse slowed, he got up and poured dogfood in the bowl and let Gus out the back door. As soon as Gus visited his favorite bush, he bolted back inside and devoured breakfast.

Coop turned on the lights on his way back to the reception area and spied the fluorescent orange note. Background sheet is on your desk. I’ll be in by 9. Sweet Dreams, AB.

He rebuilt the fire in his office, set the timer on the coffee maker to brew, and loaded Gus in the Jeep to hurry home for a shower. He didn’t want to wake Aunt Camille and left her a note in the kitchen, explaining he had slept at the office and would be there all day. He and Gus were back at the office before eight, refreshed and ready for the day, Coop wearing a t-shirt imprinted with Before you give me your best shot, I recommend you read my return policy.

The rich scent of roasted coffee filled the office and Coop filled his Vanderbilt mug to the rim. He reviewed AB’s work and summarized Hunt’s background on the whiteboard.

Coop noticed his dog’s ear perk, announcing the arrival of AB. Gus rushed to the back door to greet her. The dog’s nose was in the air, inches away from the box of decadent pastries she juggled. She made her way to Coop’s office and slid the box onto the table. “I stopped at the fancy bakery and brought us some fortification.”

Coop opened the box and the comforting aroma of warm sugar and cinnamon drifted through the air. “Smells great and I’m starving.” He plucked a still warm giant sticky bun, oozing caramel.

“What time did you wake up?” she asked.

“Not until this morning. I ran home and showered and got back here about an hour ago. I’ve been staring at my summary notes. Keep hoping I’ll notice something that would lead to a break in this case.”

“Just for fun, I tried to find something on the surname Featherstone and found a golfer and a guy in England. I don’t think either is our Mr. Featherstone,” she said, selecting a pastry. “Hope Ben comes up with something.”

He reviewed the information they had gathered. “So, Judge Hunt is older than us, but went to Vanderbilt. He graduated high school from a fancy private academy in 1980.
